On August 1, Garnison Military Pub in Kyiv will host the presentation of Light Through the Ruins, a documentary photobook by photographer and musician Yurii Veres, published by Bilka Publishing.
Yurii Veres spent more than three years working on the book, documenting life in Ukraine during the full-scale war. The publication brings together more than 300 photographs taken between 2022 and 2025 in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
The book is also complemented by images of woven artworks created by three generations of women in the author's family—his great-grandmother Mariia, grandmother Hanna, and aunt Valentyna. Some of these works were lost when the Ivankiv Historical and Local History Museum was destroyed in a Russian missile strike in 2022.
During the presentation, Yurii Veres will share the stories behind the photographs, speak about his experience as a documentary photographer working during wartime, and tell the story of how the book came into being.
The evening will also feature an acoustic performance by Kamianyi Hist, the band led by Yurii Veres. The musical program will serve as a natural continuation of the conversation, bringing together documentary photography and original music in a single space.
Following the presentation, guests will have an opportunity to meet the author, purchase the book, and receive a signed copy.
The event has a charitable purpose. A fundraising campaign in support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces will take place throughout the evening, and a portion of the proceeds from book sales will also be donated to support Ukraine's defenders.
